History

Mount Sinai Hospital is a state-of-the-art institution that specializes in quality care for those suffering from respiratory diseases, our specialty for over 100 years. Due to the increasing needs of the province’s population, we have also established a well-respected Palliative Care unit and long-term care facility, as well as outpatient, home care and post-acute care services. Since its founding in 1909, Mount Sinai has been known not only for advanced treatment techniques and innovative research in respiratory diseases, but also for its unique comprehensive multi-faceted approach to total patient care that includes prevention, diagnosis, treatment and education.

Our Auxiliary was founded in 1933 by a group of dedicated women who wanted to help the patients of the Hospital in their daily lives. We have since evolved into a membership of over 1000 men and women who support us with donations and patronage in our various fundraising events. Due to increasing government budgetary cuts, the Hospital is very much in need of medical equipment and specialized programs which the Auxiliary has pledged to fund.

Many dedicated men and women give numerous volunteer hours to organize the projects, which help us to reach our financial goals. Some of these fundraising projects are an annual Bridge & Mah JonggTournament, Raffle Draw, Book and Movie Reviews, Art Auctions and galas such as Dinner Dances and Theatre events. Several ongoing projects such as the collection of loose change and can tabs, the sale of Agendas and Cookbooks and our beautiful Gift Shop, further help us to raise funds.

In addition to fundraising events, The Auxiliary also provides services for the Hospital and the patients and their families such as the Coffee Shop, a bulletin publication, holiday gift-giving, weekly Friday afternoon Oneg Shabbats and special Welcome Packages which are given to every new patient or resident upon arrival.

The Auxiliary is now currently funding the Music Therapy program. This activity is very specialized for the needs of our patients and residents, and is part of what makes this Hospital unique in its area of expertise.

Dedicated to humanity in the spirit of volunteerism, the Auxiliary strives to uphold their philosophy of enhancing the lives of the patients and residents of Mount Sinai Hospital.
